- Open the Scanner Lid: Lift the top cover as if you were placing a document on the flatbed.
- Locate the ADF Glass Strip: Look to the left of the main large glass. You will see a narrow strip of glass (about 1 inch wide).
- Clean the Strip: Wipe this small glass strip with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth.
-
- Pro Tip: Use a small amount of glass cleaner or distilled water on the cloth—never spray it directly on the printer.
-
- Inspect for “Invisible” Spots: Shine a phone flashlight on the glass. Even a microscopic speck of ink, dried white-out, or adhesive from a sticky note can cause a bold line.
- Clean the White Bar: Look at the underside of the lid directly above that glass strip. Clean the long white plastic bar located there, as dirt on it can also cause issues. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
-
- Line only on ADF? If yes, the issue is definitely the narrow glass strip.
- Line on Flatbed too? If the line appears even when you don’t use the feeder, clean the main large glass.
- Line on all prints? If lines appear when printing from a computer (not just scanning), you may need a Print Head Cleaning from the Maintenance menu. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Vertical lines appearing only when using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) are almost always caused by a tiny speck of debris on the narrow scanner glass strip. As paper slides over this fixed spot, it creates a continuous line across the entire scan. [1, 2, 3]
🛠️ How to Fix the ADF Line
- Open the Scanner Lid: Lift the top cover as if you were placing a document on the flatbed.
- Locate the ADF Glass Strip: Look to the left of the main large glass. You will see a narrow strip of glass (about 1 inch wide).
- Clean the Strip: Wipe this small glass strip with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth.
- Pro Tip: Use a small amount of glass cleaner or distilled water on the cloth—never spray it directly on the printer.
🔍 Quick Checklist
- Line only on ADF? If yes, the issue is definitely the narrow glass strip.
- Line on Flatbed too? If the line appears even when you don’t use the feeder, clean the main large glass.
- Line on all prints? If lines appear when printing from a computer (not just scanning), you may need a Print Head Cleaning from the Maintenance menu. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Did cleaning that specific small strip of glass on the left remove the line from your scans?
